Should Russia look East or West for economic prosperity?

There have been many reports in recent weeks about Russia pivoting towards China and speculation that the Eastern market will soon replace Europe’s. Indeed, a number of key business deals have been signed over the past year and the volume of bilateral trade continues to rise.
My latest op-ed, published in New Europe, argues that China will never truly replace Europe, and the notion of a coherent, long-term Sino-Russian alliance is untenable. I believe that Russia is tied to Europe economically, socially and culturally.
