Flying hobby drones in Norway

Yes! Andrey Yakunin has finally been acquitted of all the charges. There is no criminal offence for him to fly drones in Svalbard.

WHAT WAS THIS CASE ABOUT?

Andrey is involved in a legal case over the interpretation of sanctions law in Norway. He was detained in October 2022, and released in December 2022. He was charged with illegally flying a recreational drone on the grounds of his nationality and was acquitted multiple times before the Supreme Court ruled that sanctions law applies to recreational drones. The case has been sent for retrial scheduled for 24-26 January 2024. The District Court acquitted Andrey Yakunin once more. The prosecution then appealed the verdict again, but this time, the Court of Appeal refused the prosecution’s appeal. On the 3rd of April the prosecution has officially confirmed that they will not proceed with further appeals. As such, Andrey Yakunin has finally been acquitted of all the charges.
